Tara Miller Rourke

Growing up swimming and playing water polo, in San Diego, CA, Tara has always understood the importance of having an active and healthy lifestyle. Tara received her BA in Psychology from California State University, San Marcos, and her MA in Psychological Research from California University, Long Beach. While she was in graduate school, Tara wanted to find a fun way to reduce stress while staying healthy and active. In 2010, Tara took her first barre class and instantly fell in love. After only a few months, Tara knew she would somehow find a way to open a studio of her own.

When the time was right for Tara to open her own studio, she knew Studio Barre was the perfect fit. She loved how Studio Barre put such a strong importance on creating an environment where everyone is welcomed with a warm smile and a challenging workout! Tara knew studio Barre’s strong community-centered culture would be the perfect fit for Charleston! In November 2014 she opened Studio Barre James Island and has enjoyed seeing the way Studio Barre has changed so many people’s lives.

Tara and her husband, Pete, had their first child, Davey, in January 2017. She has loved having a fun, safe, and effective workout she was able to do throughout her pregnancy and after giving birth. Not only did she enjoy the physical benefits Studio Barre provided after having a baby, but she also has been blown away by the emotional and social support provided by Studio Barre’s amazing community of staff and clients.

Andrea Saffer

Andrea took her first barre class 3 years ago and instantly fell in love. As a long-time student of pilates and yoga, she was thrilled to discover this fast-paced, low impact workout that provides such amazing physical and mental benefits. When she moved back home to Charleston after finishing graduate school in the summer of 2015, she was interested in finding a new home studio. After she took her first class at SBJI, she knew she had found what she was looking for. She was impressed by the intensity of the choreography but also by the encouraging and positive vibes within the studio itself. Making the transition from student to instructor has been a most rewarding challenge. She is constantly striving to improve her form and technique in class and is excited to help others do the same.

She has a passion for health and wellness and works as a family nurse practitioner in a functional/integrative medical practice. She has her Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from MUSC. Prior to that, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from UNC Chapel Hill and worked as a RN at Roper Hospital.

Shannon was born in Long Island, NY but moved to Charleston when she was 6. She, therefore, considers herself a true southern belle! Shannon graduated from The University of South Carolina in 2003 with a degree in early childhood education. She later pursued her masters at The Citadel, where she graduated in 2009, with a degree in literacy education. She has been a first grade teacher at Boulder Bluff Elementary school for the past 9 years and loves it! Now, Shannon has moved on to work for the Berkeley County School District as a teacher evaluator. It will be an exciting and new adventure; but it will be hard to leave those sweet first grade babies!

Shannon has also been dancing since she was 3 years old. It’s in her blood! Shannon has done ballet, tap, jazz, and lyrical as well as hip-hop (that was a disaster–her body just can’t move like that)! While Shannon still loves dancing, she was itching to try something new to maintain her love of movement and physical exercise. Enter Studio Barre! Her friend, Amie, told her to try a class. It only took one class and Shannon was hooked! After becoming a barre maniac and taking double after double, Shannon knew she had found a new home! She took a shot and auditioned to become a barre{tender} and the rest is history! Shannon loves creating challenging classes and pushing her clients to be the best barre babes they can be! She also tends to sing and dance throughout the class so it’s sure to be a good time! Shannon promises–come and see!

Ashley Zalabak

Ashley moved to Charleston from Greenville, SC in 2007 to attend College of Charleston and study Marine Biology. After graduating, she got a job as at the South Carolina Aquarium and teaches people about the ocean every day.

In addition to loving animals, Ashley has always been a health and fitness advocate. She always enjoyed going to group fitness classes growing up. Being a group fitness junkie lent itself to trying all of the hotspot gyms and studios in Charleston. Hopping around from yoga to barre to cycling studios, she kept trying new spots testing out all of the “new student specials.”

When she started Studio Barre, it was unlike any other fitness community that she had ever been a part of. From the moment she walked in and was greeted with a friendly face to the next day when she couldn’t walk and got a personalized note in the mail, she was hooked. The friendliness of the staff combined with the intensity of the workout created a home away from home for Ashley. After about a year, she tried out to follow a dream she’s always had of being a fitness instructor. After a whirlwind of training and test outs, she made it and couldn’t be happier to share her passion with others! She loves every second of inspiring, pushing, challenging, and helping clients reach their fitness goals. Not only is she a barre{tender} at SBJI, but she is also a friendly, welcoming face to every person that walks through the door.
